Rowntree, Joseph

Rowntree, Joseph
(1836–1925)
   Philanthropist.
Rowntree was born in Yorkshire of an eminent Quaker family; his father had had a life-long interest in education and had founded several schools.
As a boy, the young Rowntree joined the family grocery business and later became head of the Rowntree cocoa works. He was known as an enlightened business man who did much to improve workplace conditions. He is particularly remembered for founding the model village of New Earswick, which demonstrated how a caring employer could both ensure decent conditions for his workers and run a profitable enterprise. He remained a prominent member of the Society of Friends and is one of a long line of English Quaker philanthropists.
